What is the B and why is it important? When we talk or hear about Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, (DEI), we don’t mention the “B”enough. Organizations understand how valuable it is to emphasize the importance of ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion work is being done. However, belonging is just as important, if not more so, because workplace expectation. In fact, a 2021 McKinsey & Co. survey reported that 51% of respondents who left their job in the previous six months did so because of a lack of belonging. To really put the importance of belonging into perspective, industry research has shown that the need to belong in the workplace comes second only to the need to belong at home.
According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, belonging is defined as, “a feeling of being happy or comfortable as part of a particular group and having a good relationship with the other members of the group because they welcome you and accept you.” When employees feel like they belong, they are likely to be more productive and motivated. Not only does this benefit the employee, but the corporation as well. Feelings of inclusion and belonging make employees actually want to go to work and want to put the work in. Everyone’s a winner!
